Hawkeyes @ Minnesota 9/28

Floyd Week

It's finally B1G season.  Not that the other games don't matter, but they definitely don't matter as much.  Not that all of the teams in conference play are good, but at least we can get a feel how good they are within a game or two.  I think this game is going to expose Minnesota's 4-0 record for what it really is, overrated.

After a light week, we are going to see a heavy dose of Mark Weisman. When it's over he is going to have 30 carries for 170 yards and 2 TD's. We are going to see some work from Bullock too but a surprisingly light week from Canzeri and Daniels.  The Hawkeyes will total 225 yards on the ground.

For the passing game B1G, meet Damond Powell.  We are going to see two long completions for Powell that will show the speed Iowa has in the JUCO receiver. We will also see Rudock spread the ball to a lot of different receivers as distributes the ball to the WR's and TE's.  When all is said and done he will have just shy of 300 yards passing with 2 TD's and another on the ground.

The defense will start strong to get Iowa to halftime with a nice lead. The only problem with that is it tends to lead to the prevent defense too early and they will give up a couple late TD's that makes this game look closer than it really is.

My prediction is Iowa wins this game 41- 23 and Floyd comes on home to Iowa for another year.

Hawkeyes @ Iowa State 9/14/13

On the eve of the battle for the CyHawk Trophy I am sitting very optimistic.  Not as much optimism about how great Iowa is, but about how great the difference is between the two teams.  Even though Iowa hasn't looked great overall, I think they will walk away with this one fairly easily.  This game is different than in years passed. It's different because the Cyclones have actually one a couple in a row. It's different because the expectations for Iowa are low.  The biggest difference though, is over half the players on the two deep have 0 or 1 victory over the Clones.  They don't have the experience of beating down Iowa State to allow them to overlook this game.  For them, this is a B12 opponent, not the bad in state charity game.  As crazy as it may sound, for college aged kids, the history of this series is that of a competitive rivalry.  Wow, the rest of us must be old.

For the game, Iowa is going to continue to rack up rushing yards.  Mark Weisman will top 100 yards again and the team will combine for over 225 yards rushing.  We will see a little more of LeShun Daniels in this game. Also, I think this will be the game where Shumpert gets moved down a peg.  We will see a combination of Tevaun Smith and Damond Powell taking over the opposite side of KMM.  Jake Rudock will put up 250 yards passing as the game goes up tempo from both sides.  No one will top 100 yards receiving but we will see catches from at least 10 different receivers.

The defense will give up very little as the young defensive backs put down an impressive performance and the DLine records a couple sacks. Yes, I'm predicting not just the first one, but also the second one from the DLine.

Iowa goes into Ames and covers the spread with a 31-13 victory. Go Hawks!

Hawkeyes vs Missouri St 9/7/2013

Although the outcome from last week was not what we wanted, we definitely could see a lot of positives to build on.  The offensive line had a good start as the offense combined for over 200 yards rushing.  We saw the faster paced offense that will result in us seeing a lot more plays this year.  We also saw a more aggressive play calling that has not been seen from Kirk Ferentz teams.  As the team gets more game reps in this style I think this team will be dangerous this year.  I still see 8 wins coming.

This week's game does not pose much of a challenge. I predict Iowa is going to win this game 48-15 as they continue to work on this faster offense.  The team is going to combine for 350 yards rushing with Weisman and Bullock both topping 100 yards and Canzeri and LeShun Daniels getting some steady action.  I also think we will see a breakout game of sorts from Damond Powell as you will see him top 100 yards and get a TD.  The surprise again this week will be the lack of getting the Tight Ends involved.

Overall we should leave this game with some confidence and excitement going into the Iowa State game.  Although, leave is a relative term for me today as I won't be at Kinnick due to a 9 year old's flag football game I need to coach.  Looks like DVR for me.
